Life
on Mars - Life on Mars shows Isabel in familiar environments that
are at the same time external and alien. Standing in the flawed
waters, forests and woodlands that make up the English countryside
around her home in Bath, she experiences the physical and emotional
release that comes from being in environments that though isolated
and raw, are flawed and visibly marked with the signs of human
intervention. She stands alone, yet at the same time is part of
a primal social identity that emerges from the landscapes of which
she, and all of us, are still part.
Childhood is an intensely social time, but it is also lonely,
a period when we must make the most difficult decisions of our
lives, decisions that are apparent in the paths, trails and signs
that lie scattered across these flawed English vistas. Isabel
is conscious and unconscious, here but not here, a real presence
that exists in the imaginary landscapes that are Life on Mars.
